Kenya’s first female attorney general, Dorcas Agik Oduor has emerged as our spotlight woman of the week at Instinct Women’s Magazine.

Dorcas Agik Oduor is a trailblazing legal mind and the first woman to hold the office of Attorney General in Kenya. Born on November 12, 1965, in Nakuru District, she has had a remarkable career spanning over three decades as a lawyer.

She completed her secondary education at Lwak Girls’ High School in 1983. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi in 1990 and a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law in 1991. She was admitted to the Bar as an advocate of the High Court in 1992.

She has served in various capacities within the legal system. She began her career as a State Counsel in 1991 and worked her way up to become the Secretary of Public Prosecutions. She has also been involved in several high-profile commissions, including the Akiwumi Commission on Land Clashes, the Bosire Commission on the Goldenberg Affair, and the Kiruki Commission on the Artur Brothers.

In recognition of her exemplary service, Oduor was conferred the rank and dignity of Senior Counsel by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2020. She was nominated by President William Ruto to be the Attorney General in 2024, following the removal of the previous Attorney General, Justin Muturi. She was approved by the Kenyan Parliament and sworn in on August 20, 2024.

As the first female Attorney General, she has expressed her commitment to reforming the criminal justice system by addressing delays in court cases and providing timely legal advice to the government. Her vision includes promoting the rule of law, protecting human rights, and ensuring good governance.

She has been honored with several awards, including the Elder of the Burning Spear and the Member of the Order of the Golden Warrior.
