Boatemaa Barfour-Awuah Sworn in as 12th President of Ghana Insurers Association (GIA)

Boatemaa Barfour-Awuah, CEO of Star Assurance Limited, has officially been inaugurated as the 12th President of the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), marking a pivotal moment for Ghana’s insurance sector. The investiture ceremony took place on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

Mrs. Barfour-Awuah takes the helm of GIA with a mandate to strengthen professionalism, drive innovation, and enhance public trust in insurance services. Highlighting her priorities, she emphasized the need for effective public education on insurance products and the development of affordable, diversified solutions to deepen insurance penetration, particularly among underserved communities and the informal sector.

The outgoing President, Seth Kobla Aklasi of Ghana Re PLC, whose tenure saw the completion of the landmark Insurance House, commended the new leadership, urging Mrs. Barfour-Awuah to “lead with courage, inspire with vision, and continue to empower our members.”

Established in 1988, the GIA serves as the collective voice for Ghana’s insurance and reinsurance companies, advocating for policy improvements, member interests, and consumer protection. Mrs. Barfour-Awuah brings over 18 years of experience in insurance and financial services, holding dual master’s degrees in Finance & Accounting and Management from the University of Southampton, UK, alongside professional Chartered Insurer qualifications (ACII, UK).

The ceremony saw the presence of industry regulators, including the Commissioner of Insurance Abiba Zakaria, and representatives from leading associations such as WAICA, IBAG, and CIMG, underlining the significance of her appointment for the sector.

Under her leadership, the Ghana Insurers Association is poised to advance industry growth, drive innovation, and increase insurance accessibility nationwide.
