According to Victoria Abiola Ajayi, Group Managing Director and CEO of TVC Communications, today’s chaotic work culturedefined by constant notifications, nonstop meetings, and clashing priorities, requires leaders to champion clarity and lasting focus if they want to achieve real results.
Drawing from the Yoruba proverb, “The man who chases two rats catches none,” Ajayi highlighted the dangers of divided attention in the modern workplace. She noted that while effort is abundant, the real leadership challenge lies in protecting attention amid constant noise and urgency.
“Leading effectively in this age of distraction is not about working harder or faster, but about creating the conditions for clear thinking, better decision-making, and meaningful outcomes,” Ajayi stated.
In her insightful leadership message, Ajayi outlined seven practical strategies for leaders to navigate distraction and build high-performing teams:
Creating Clarity in a Noisy Environment: Leaders must communicate priorities clearly so teams understand what truly matters, reducing anxiety and enabling focused execution.
Modelling Focus as a Leader: Leaders should demonstrate calm, deliberate focus by protecting time for deep work and minimising unnecessary interruptions, setting a positive example for their teams.
Redefining Urgency: Not everything requires immediate action. Effective leaders distinguish between urgent and important tasks, establishing realistic timelines to improve work quality and reduce burnout.
Building a Culture that Protects Attention: Organisations should establish communication boundaries, encourage uninterrupted work periods, and simplify processes to foster deeper thinking and collaboration.
