Sibongiseni Ngoma Appointed Deputy Auditor-General of South Africa

Sibongiseni Ngoma has been appointed Deputy Auditor-General of the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA), becoming only the second woman to hold the position in the institution’s 115-year history.

Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke announced the appointment this week following consultation with Parliament’s Standing Committee on the Auditor-General (SCOAG). The appointment took effect on 1 June 2026 after a rigorous recruitment process. Ngoma had been serving in the role in an acting capacity, now formally assumes responsibility as the national audit office’s accounting officer, overseeing operations in support of the Auditor-General’s vision.

With more than 20 years of experience as a chartered accountant, Ngoma brings a wealth of expertise in financial management, internal audit, governance, and strategic leadership to one of South Africa’s key constitutional institutions.

Distinguished career trajectory

Ngoma joined AGSA in  as Corporate Executive responsible for Internal Operations. She was appointed Chief Financial Officer , a role she held while also serving as a Corporate Executive. During her tenure, she demonstrated strong strategic management of the finance business unit, including management accounting, financial accounting, procurement, supply chain, and facilities management.

She successfully delivered IFRS-compliant annual audited financial statements, developed robust cash flow forecasts, and enhanced reporting to the executive committee, audit committee, and parliamentary oversight structures.

Before joining AGSA, Ngoma spent over 12 years at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), where she rose to become Head of Internal Audit . In that role, she developed and implemented internal audit strategies, championed governance best practices, monitored King III compliance, and provided objective assessments on risk management and internal controls.

Her earlier career included serving as Senior Manager in Finance at the IDC and training as an articled clerk at Ernst & Young between 1997 and 2000.
