Anne Juuko lead East African Development Bank as new CEO

The East African Development Bank has appointed Anne Juuko as its new chief executive, placing a seasoned banking and capital markets executive at the helm of one of the region’s longest-serving development finance institutions.

Yusuf Murangwa, Chairperson of the Bank’s Governing Council and Rwanda’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, described Juuko as an experienced financial sector leader with a proven record of driving growth across African markets.

“Anne Juuko is a distinguished financial sector leader with a strong record of delivering growth across multiple African markets. Her deep understanding of the region’s economies, capital markets and development financing will be invaluable as EADB enters its next phase,” Murangwa said.

Juuko said she was honoured to join an institution that has served the region for nearly six decades and pledged to work with stakeholders to strengthen its development finance role.

“It is a privilege to join an institution that has been in existence for almost sixty years, and I am excited to work with stakeholders across the region to build on that foundation and deliver even greater impact for future generations,” she said.

Her immediate priorities, she added, will centre on deepening the Bank’s development finance mandate, attracting new sources of long-term capital and forging partnerships that expand its reach across East Africa.

“Building on the achievements of management and staff and supported by a Governing Council committed to excellence in governance, my priority will be to deepen the Bank’s development finance role, unlock new sources of long-term capital, and cultivate strategic partnerships that expand our reach and deliver lasting socio-economic impact across the region,” Juuko said.

Born in Zirobwe, Luweero District, Anne Juuko brings more than two decades of experience in banking, capital markets and executive leadership. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University and a Master of Strategic Planning from Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, and has completed several executive leadership programmes.

Her career began at Citibank Uganda, where she rose to Vice President and Head of Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities, before moving to Citibank Kenya as Vice President for Customer Sales and Derivatives Marketing. She later joined Standard Bank Group, serving as Head of Global Markets at Stanbic Bank Uganda and subsequently as Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Standard Bank Namibia.

She returned to Uganda as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Bank Uganda, leading the institution through the Covid-19 period. Under her leadership the bank introduced credit support for small and medium-sized businesses and financial inclusion programmes such as Stanbic4Her.

Total assets grew from about Shs6.65 trillion to Shs8.57 trillion. She later took up the role of Regional Head of Global Markets for East Africa at Standard Bank Group, overseeing operations across seven national markets from Nairobi.

Her appointment places her at the head of a regional development finance institution mandated to support economic development and investment across East Africa.

The Governing Council also thanked Benard Mono, Senior Director of Finance and Treasury, for guiding the Bank during the interim period, noting that his stewardship helped maintain continuity and stability as the institution transitioned to new substantive leadership.
