Chiamaka Nnake becomes Anambra’s first female Secretary to the State Government

Chiamaka Nnake’s appointment as Secretary to the Anambra State Government — the first woman to hold the position in the state’s history — is precisely that kind of moment. It did not happen because a ceiling was broken in a single dramatic gesture.

It happened because a professional of uncommon depth and intellectual rigour built, over more than a decade, the exact profile that this role demands.

At 39, she brings to the SSG seat a career that runs from the audit rooms of KPMG and the trading desks of Meristem Securities, through the strategy consulting floors of PricewaterhouseCoopers, and into the policy chambers of one of Nigeria’s most reform-conscious state governments.

Nnake’s entry into professional life was defined by financial discipline and analytical rigour. Her early formation at KPMG and Sterling Bank was followed by over five years at Meristem Securities Limited, where she served first as Accountant and then as Investment Research Analyst — building the kind of market intelligence and financial modelling experience that underpins sound economic judgement.

A brief but focused stint as Senior Business Analyst at IHS Towers sharpened her commercial instincts further, before she made the move that would prove most formative: joining PricewaterhouseCoopers Nigeria as a strategy consultant.

At PwC, she rose from Assistant Manager to Manager within the Advisory — Strategy practice, advising clients across business planning, operating model design, financial analysis, business transformation, and feasibility studies. It was work that demanded the ability to diagnose institutional dysfunction, design structural solutions, and manage the human complexity of change — skills that translate directly into the work of governing. She spent nearly five years in that environment, leaving as one of the practice’s most accomplished strategy professionals.

Her transition into public service as Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Anambra State was not a departure from strategy — it was strategy at its highest application. As Commissioner, she led the mobilisation, planning, and allocation of state resources to drive socio-economic development, overseeing budget architecture that directly determined the quality of public services for millions of Anambra residents.

She simultaneously held leadership roles across the Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency, the Internal Revenue Service Board, and the Small Business Agency — a portfolio that reflects not just administrative competence, but a deliberate agenda of economic reform and institutional strengthening. She served as the state’s Reform Champion for Ease of Doing Business, as Focal Point for Social Investment Programmes, and as Nigeria Chairperson for the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity Programme — making her one of the most consequential technocrats in Nigeria’s southeast governance landscape.

In appointing Chiamaka Nnake as Secretary to the State Government, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has placed at the administrative helm of Anambra a professional who has earned every credential that the office requires — not through proximity to power, but through the patient, rigorous accumulation of expertise across finance, strategy, and public policy. The historic nature of her appointment is undeniable. But it is her record, not her gender, that makes it significant.
