In a remarkable appointment that begins a new epoch for legal education in Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School. At 57, Dr. Odusote becomes the first woman to helm the prestigious institution since its founding in 1962, succeeding Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose eight-year tenure.
Currently serving as Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus, Dr. Odusote brings over two decades of dedicated service to the Nigerian Law School. Her journey within the institution began in 2001 when she joined as a lecturer. Through steadfast commitment and excellence, she advanced progressively: from Lecturer (2001-2004) to Senior Lecturer (2004-2007), Deputy Director (Academics) at the Lagos Campus (2007-2011), and later as Director and Head of Academics since 2011. These roles have honed her expertise in academic leadership, curriculum development, and administrative oversight.
A distinguished scholar, Dr. Odusote’s academic credentials are impeccable. She earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. Pursuing advanced studies at the same institution, she obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) with a specialization in Company and Commercial Law. Her scholarly pursuit culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom (2013-2020), where her research focused on public law and the administration of justice. Adding to her international exposure, she served as a Visiting Scholar at Nottingham Trent University in 2012.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Odusote is a prolific researcher and contributor to legal discourse. She has published extensively in reputable local and international law journals, with works cited on topics including corruption, professional ethics, administration of estates, and property law practice. She has presented papers at numerous legal education conferences and actively served on committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association.
In her new role, Dr. Odusote will steer the Nigerian Law School’s academic direction, administrative management, and strategic vision across its multiple campuses. As the primary liaison with key stakeholders—the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association—she is poised to foster innovation, uphold excellence, and advance gender inclusion in Nigeria’s legal profession.
Dr. Odusote’s appointment signals a progressive chapter, blending deep institutional knowledge with forward-thinking leadership to nurture the next generation of ethical and competent legal practitioners.
